"My grandfather’s seminal textbook, Microneruosurgery, by Robert W. Rand, MD, PhD, is displayed with prominence in my office. Beside it is the Black’s Law Dictionary he used while attending law school at night after a busy day in the operating room. To me, the proximity of these family treasures symbolizes the reality that law and medicine—the statute and the suture—are inextricably intertwined. My grandfather certainly understood this to be true, and so do I. Four generations of medical doctors precede me. Although I chose a different path, my respect for those who practice medicine is deeply rooted and I derive tremendous pride in advocating on their behalf."
